Although the essence strictly 'consumer' of the IFA Berlin , VIA has nevertheless decided to choose this setting to showcase the results of the project VIA OpenBook , the new ultra low cost achieved through the use of the VIA C7-M.
The VIA OpenBook reference configuration, based on the VIA Ultra Mobility Platform Plataforma, consists of a processor VIA C7-M Ultra Low Voltage 1.6 GHz, combined with the VIA VX800 chipset equipped with integrated video controller solution represented by the VIA Chrome9 DirectX 9 , can support hardware acceleration for decoding MPEG-2, MPEG-4 , VC1 and DiVX. OpenBook also has at least a 80GB hard drive and the ability to support at least 2GB of system memory (the implementation of this will depend on various manufacturers).
In terms of connectivity features, OpenBook features a controller Broadcom 10/100/1000 regarding the operations of the cable network, and may have a form Broadcom 802.11b / g can combine WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities in version base, or add to these also support the AGPS technology if the manufacturer chooses to implement the most advanced form.
OpenBook also has an integrated card reader, 3 USB ports and a D-Sub connector for connection to an external monitor. The display is a 2.1 megapixel camera.
The system will be able to support operating systems Windows XP, Windows Vista and Linux distributions . Products based on the VIA Ultra Mobility Platform, inspired by the project del'OpenBook reference design will be available on the market soon. The price range that VIA has shown us (although it is emphasized that The user price will be determined by each manufacturer and not by the same EIA) should be between 300 and 500 Euro , depending on the amount of memory installed, the wireless module used and the operating system that will be provided. Again, therefore, is likely to assume a higher price for the solutions that will see Windows preinstalled, because of higher expenditure needed to purchase the license to use the operating system.
