VIA OpenBook on display at IFA

(from http://www.hwupgrade.it, 28/08/2008)

Although the essence strictly 'consumer' of the IFA Berlin , VIA has nevertheless decided to choose this setting to showcase the results of the project VIA OpenBook , the new ultra low cost achieved through the use of the VIA C7-M.

The VIA OpenBook reference configuration, based on the VIA Ultra Mobility Platform Plataforma, consists of a processor VIA C7-M Ultra Low Voltage 1.6 GHz, combined with the VIA VX800 chipset equipped with integrated video controller solution represented by the VIA Chrome9 DirectX 9 , can support hardware acceleration for decoding MPEG-2, MPEG-4 , VC1 and DiVX. OpenBook also has at least a 80GB hard drive and the ability to support at least 2GB of system memory (the implementation of this will depend on various manufacturers).

In terms of connectivity features, OpenBook features a controller Broadcom 10/100/1000 regarding the operations of the cable network, and may have a form Broadcom 802.11b / g can combine WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities in version base, or add to these also support the AGPS technology if the manufacturer chooses to implement the most advanced form.

OpenBook also has an integrated card reader, 3 USB ports and a D-Sub connector for connection to an external monitor. The display is a 2.1 megapixel camera.

The system will be able to support operating systems Windows XP, Windows Vista and Linux distributions . Products based on the VIA Ultra Mobility Platform, inspired by the project del'OpenBook reference design will be available on the market soon. The price range that VIA has shown us (although it is emphasized that The user price will be determined by each manufacturer and not by the same EIA) should be between 300 and 500 Euro , depending on the amount of memory installed, the wireless module used and the operating system that will be provided. Again, therefore, is likely to assume a higher price for the solutions that will see Windows preinstalled, because of higher expenditure needed to purchase the license to use the operating system.

Psystar: Apple is the bad guy

(from http://punto-informatico.it, August 28, 2008)

There is to make the end of Open Tech, in sale for 50 thousand bucks: Psystar, the first company to proposed PC in all respects compatible with Mac OS X and sold at a fraction of the price of the original, presented to a court in California its response to the summons received from Apple. Among alleged antitrust violations and anti-competitive practices, there is also space for a damage claim.

"We bought copies of Mac OS directly from Apple or its authorized dealers" said during a press conference the president of Psystar, Rudy Pedraza , who along with his lawyers explained their views on question. Not for piracy or breach of the code of the operating system it would, but the simple right of those who buy a product and changing the code released under open source license for use both as they wish.

"All copies of the OS are to be purchased regularly," he explained Colby Springer of Carr & Ferrell study, which is part of Psystar's legal team: "Despite what is claimed - he said - there is no master disc. As for allegations that Psystar then modified the code to Mac OS X to run on non-Apple systems, even in this case there is no truth. " to be modified would be some share open source code distributed by Apple with Mac OS X, but - Springer says - in full respect of the license with which this code is released. Apple
Rather, they tell the lawyers, would be responsible for "illegal trade restrictions and anti-competitive", which would violate U.S. antitrust laws trying to force the public to only buy a Mac to take advantage of Mac OS X and thus constituting a sort of monopoly in . For this reason, the court will be asked to declare illegal the EULA of the operating system produced in Cupertino, in addition to claiming an unspecified amount of damages for lost sales Psystar immediately by following the subpoena.

to present his appeal, the Florida company has enjoyed a terms of reference thanks to the willingness shown by Apple. The latter is now up to the task of dismantling the arguments of the counter-complaint, although it is likely that the two companies will seek the path of extra-judicial order not to court. The first hearing was set for next October 22. Meanwhile, Psystar would stand also preparing to market a portable able to mount Mac OS X.

BadVista The campaign is an advocate for the freedom of computer users, opposing adoption of Microsoft Windows Vista and promoting free (as in freedom) software alternatives.

If you put Microsoft at the center of your home entertainment system, be prepared to hand them the remote control, literally.

Following reports that digital television viewers were blocked from recording the new season of NBC's "Gladiators", Microsoft confirmed that it is preventing users from recording the show. They claim they were acting on behalf of NBC, and are in line with regulations set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), in disrupting computer usage based upon the so-called "broadcast flag" that was transmitted alongside the show.

A Microsoft spokesperson told CNET News, "...Windows Media Center fully adheres to the flags used by broadcasters and content owners to determine how their content is distributed and consumed."

The broadcast flag is a sequence of information transmitted alongside television programs as a kind of digital order telling viewers to not do certain things, such as record the show or share it with a friend.

IDF: how to recharge the batteries without using wires

(da http://www.dinoxpc.com, 25 agosto 2008)

Sono passati molti anni, undici per la precisione, the first IDF - Intel Developer Forum - meeting a "must see" for journalists and industry professionals. IDF Intel Inside talk about current and future projects but also opens the doors of its laboratories to talk about future plans that could see their implementation in 5, 10 or however many years.

One of the most interesting ideas and of which we may soon see a practical consider the possibility of charging batteries portable devices without using cables or connections of any kind .

technology show for the first time by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) is given as Wireless Resonant Energy Link or, for those who love acronyms, WREL . It exploits the principle of resonance to transfer power from a source to a device. To demonstrate the validity Intel has fired a well-60W bulb without using any wires, more than enough power to recharge the battery of a notebook even at some distance from the transmitter.

Despite everything, however, the technology still needs to finish various, partly because wireless technologies have been and still are, a source of many controversial discussions related not only efficiency but also the risks associated with human health.

WREL addition to technology, Intel has spoken, the voice of its chief technology officer Justin Rattner of the relationship between man and machine. In a not too distant future, probably around 2050, the machines could take over humans about the reasoning ability and vision are based on several projects, Intel Lab

Finally we have returned to speak again of Moore's Law which states that in the world of technology we see a doubling of the number of transistors on a chip every 18-24 months. According to Rattner this law will still have its validity for at least another 10 or 15 years. In this area will assist to transition from planar chip stacked chip (3D) with transistors instead of silicon compounds.

(from http://business.webnews.it)

continues the slow process of rapprochement, or better than "circumvention" by Google in the mobile world. Another application prepared by the search giant appears ready for the mobile world but for the moment is adjusted to Google Gears. This is a geolocation service for which now opens the Mountain View API. The aim is to find new uses for software that can detect the location of the user connecting to the network without using devices GPS.

The system uses the cells, or local units to which the phones are constantly connected and always has information about the location and availability (basically there as a field) of each device. The project will then be able to determine the coordinates of any device through WiFi connection.

The great search engine, also is renewing the contract with the operator Verizon. If all goes to port the Google search engine that will appear on the pages of the default browser for all mobile phone branded by the company, which has 36 million customers, 13.1 million of whom use according to Nielsen research anywhere.

Google Gears is a beta offered by Google can provide access off-line to some services that usually operate on-line.

It installs a database engine based on SQLite , on the client system to store data locally. The pages that Google Gears enabled by using data from the local cache instead of on-line.

Using Google Gears, a web application may periodically synchronize the data in the local cache with the online service. If there is a network connection, the synchronization is deferred until the connection will fail again. Thus Google Gears enables web applications to work even when access to network services is absent.
